Koi | Beijing Vanward 108 | Sculpture Design: Zhang Zhaohong | Planning, Fabrication & Installation: ODE

These three koi are not simply reproductions of a familiar form.

They represent an exploration of how traditional Eastern imagery can be reinterpreted within a contemporary spatial context.

Commissioned by Beijing Vanward 108, the project was planned, fabricated, and installed by ODE, in collaboration with sculptor Zhang Zhaohong. Beginning with a full-scale clay model, the team carefully refined the curves, transitions, and movement of each fish, allowing every line to convey a sense of life and imminent motion.

As the work entered the hand-forged stainless steel stage, metal became more than a structural material—it became part of the artistic expression itself. An iridescent titanium coating creates shifting layers of color and reflection, allowing the sculpture to respond continuously to changes in light and environment.

What ultimately defines the work is its relationship with the surrounding space. Viewed at eye level, it appears restrained and elegant; from above, the three fish form a continuous swimming trajectory. As water and fountains interact with the sculpture, reflections are constantly disrupted and renewed, giving the static form a sense of organic movement.

Our interest was never simply to create a group of koi,

but to reintroduce a familiar symbol of Eastern culture through a contemporary artistic language.
