The Everlasting Sorrow became an eternal classic because it embodies a love constrained by identity, power, and moral boundaries — a relationship destined to remain unreachable. The romance between Emperor Li Longji of the Tang Dynasty and the legendary beauty Yang Yuhuan unfolded like a magnificent dream within the height of a flourishing empire, only to end in sorrow beneath the weight of history.
Artist Zhang Yutong transformed this forbidden emotional narrative into sculptural expression, reconstructing the spiritual essence of the classic through spatial tension and figurative form. Through the integration of bronze casting, stone carving, and hand-hammered copper techniques, ODE brought the work into physical realization, allowing the emotional weight of history to resonate through material and form.
