Sanjiangyuan Nature Reserve Art Landmark Installation | Artist: Aisong | Fabrication & Installation: ODE

Public art does not belong only to cities.

It can also belong to snow-capped mountains, rivers, and vast plateaus.

Constructed in weathering steel, the work integrates silhouettes of Tibetan antelopes and other plateau wildlife into the visual language of the reserve’s identity. Through its unified cut-out form, the installation appears to emerge naturally from the landscape, becoming part of its surroundings.

For many years, Aisong has focused on ecological and cultural themes, grounding his practice in a deep respect for nature and life. Built upon years of dialogue and shared exploration of art and environmental conservation, ODE was deeply involved in bringing this project to fruition.

To complete the installation, the team traveled to the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau at an altitude of 4,700 meters. Despite thin air, extreme temperatures, and the challenges of high-altitude conditions, the team successfully completed the on-site installation, allowing the work to stand within this harsh, high-elevation landscape.

Beyond its physical form, the significance of the project lies in its reflection on the relationship between humanity and nature. When public art truly enters the natural world, it becomes more than an installation—it becomes an expression of reverence for the land and for life itself.
