Mother’s Scent | Artist Ai Jing | Developed & Realized by ODE
Mother’s Scent is a large-scale immersive installation created by artist Ai Jing, centered around a monumental 9-meter-diameter yarn sphere. Visitors are invited to step ritualistically into the interior of the sculpture, where the space is filled with the fragrance of a mother’s shampoo. Every 20 minutes, mist is released from the top of the sphere, creating an atmosphere of warmth, calmness, and emotional security — as if returning to the womb itself.
The structure was constructed using high-strength aluminum alloy, while the exterior yarn texture was formed with natural hemp rope. To preserve the visual softness and layered interior experience, the project abandoned conventional heavy steel systems, significantly increasing the complexity of fabrication and installation.
Throughout the realization process, the ODE team collaborated with master fabricators to ensure the precision of the spherical framework and the meticulous arrangement of the rope texture, revealing the craftsmanship behind this immersive public artwork.
