A bountiful harvest of five grains
A bountiful harvest of five grains | Large-scale Metro Public Art Installation
Design: CAFA
Fabrication & Installation: ODE
Located in Changchun Metro Station.
Rooted in the regional culture of the granary on Northeast China’s black soil, the artwork takes an inverted barn dome as its main form. Drawing on wheat ear and land textures, it adopts coloured mosaic glass to create radiating golden patterns. The central light source simulates sunlight, with light diffusing outward through tessellated glass. The deep blue outer shell forms a visual contrast with the warm-toned interior, and the circular floor carving echoes the dome overhead to build a complete spatial dialogue. Transforming the traditional agrarian motif of harvest into contemporary public sculpture, the massive suspended bowl-shaped installation eases the oppressive feel of the underground space. Handcrafted mosaics retain human warmth, turning the metro station into an artistic site carrying memories of the black soil and conveying the auspicious meaning of abundant grain and perpetual vitality. ODE completed detailed design refinement, component production and on-site assembly, translating the design concept into a permanent immersive metro public art landmark.
