The Seaside Pavilion

The Seaside Pavilion

Centered on the concept of “spatio-temporal coupling”, “Chaishan Ling” transforms an abandoned dock into an emotional medium connecting people with nature. Inspired by traditional fishing ropes and wings, 36 (or 140) white woven panels hang from a wooden frame, swaying gently with sea breezes and tides. It turns invisible wind and waves into visible, dynamic rhythms.

Situated along the coastal road used by islanders and visitors, the installation serves as both a viewing platform and a welcoming landmark. Through a system of buoyancy balls and pulleys, the panels open and close with the tides, creating a rhythmic sequence resembling dancing wings, echoing the natural cycle of ebb and flow.

The corrosion-resistant fishing rope material revives memories of the fishing village, while the linear, transparent structure allows wind, light, and sea views to flow freely. It creates a pure atmosphere where “leaves sway in the wind and waves surge beneath the feet.”

As an example of poetic realism, it is more than a kinetic art piece. It is a spiritual gathering place for locals and a spot for watching ferries come and go, allowing every visitor to experience the romantic essence and living breath of the island through dynamic interaction with nature.
