Shi Jianmin is a contemporary artist who excels in both sculpture and painting, and he works and lives in Beijing and Kyoto, Japan.
His sculptural creations center on hard materials such as stainless steel. Through techniques like cutting, forging and welding, he endows the materials with an elegant and flowing charm. Representative sculptural works include Ruyi, Buddha’s Hand and Ti Xiu. Among them, the stainless steel sculpture Ruyi, created in 2005, was donated to Tianjin Art Museum in 2021. His paintings mainly adopt silk ink wash style, drawing inspiration from literati paintings of the Song Dynasty. With delicate realistic ink techniques, he depicts subjects like Taihu stones, butterflies and wild boars, wandering between classical and surreal artistic expressions. Representative paintings include Guan Yun Peak, Autumn Equinox and Returning from Treading on Flowers with Horseshoe Fragrance.
His works have been exhibited in major domestic and international art events such as the 10th National Art Exhibition, Art Basel and the exhibition Awakening: The Collision and Integration of Chinese and French Art. They have been showcased in prestigious venues including the National Art Museum of China and the National Art Gallery of Athens. His art pieces are included in the collections of institutions like the Peabody Essex Museum in the United States, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Designers’ Forum in Cologne, Germany. He has also won relevant awards at the 10th National Art Exhibition.
